If you change the baby's last name on the birth certificate the baby's father will no longer have to pay child support. By changing the baby's last name you will be telling the "court" that this guy isn't the child's father, doesn't matter whether he is or not. You just might want to THINK about being vindictive.

Congratulations on your son, I am in Australia and I have found it very difficault to change my sons name, you need the father to sign a form that you can get from the registy office its the same as when you get married, but as your son is under 18 you need the signiture of both mother and father on the birth certificate. I broke up with my sons father when my son was 4 months old, now my son is 4 and has seen his father maybe less then a handfull of times but the law insists that I need his signiture. My son is 4 years old and his father wants nothing to do with him but doesn't want to make it easy for me as I am now married and my husband who has raised my son wants to adopt him and put him in our name. Because he is on the birth certificate he will have to pay child support unless he lets you change it so he can sign all responcibilty over to you. But with this it means he has no rights to your son at all. I hope you have a easier time changing the name then I have.
Can I change my child’s name?
There is provision, in certain circumstances, to change a child’s name. Parents or guardians should contact the registry for further advice before downloading one of the above forms.
You can contact the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages by:

look online for your local vital records office #. I would not change the babies name, even if his father is no longer around. If there are doubts about paternaty there are always those tests, sometimes you can get them for free. Looking online for that is your best bet aswell. And changing the babies last name will cost... usually $100.00, so do your research, and think it over. I know it's tough, but all the records about your child have the last name... it is VERY difficult to change all the records ever written. Good luck with your relationship. I hope iether things are mended, or you find the one whos right.

Need to have a paternity test done to establish him as a father. And if he is, you will need to ask permission to change the babies last name. I am a single mom and I did not have the fathers name put on the certificate, my child carries my last name. If his father wants to his name change to his he will have to go to court to do so.

If he thinks that the baby isn't his, then he needs to get a paternity test.
I think you'd have to go to the Social Security office to have his name changed.

I think you have to go to your county records and have it changed through there.
