it can decrease the amount of milk you make because your breast is stimulated by the sucking action, and with a shield that sucking action isn't present, there is suction, but not directly on the breast, and that is what your body uses to 'measure' how much your baby is eating

A nipple shield is great to help baby learn to latch on but It will in time decrease your supply. I used one with my son for about a month before he finally latched on without it but I think if I would have known better I wouldn't have gone that long. There are a few things you should try: 1) express some milk and have baby taste it and try to latch on, 2) make sure baby is getting a mouthfull of your breast and not just the nipple, or 3) have baby latch on to the sheild and then when he/she is latched on take it off and try to have baby latch on directly. If none of these things work I would contact a LC.

Yes it can. It is also a pain, from what I hear. I would work on getting the baby to latch. You should contact the LLL or the hospitals LC for help with this. There are also websites that show you how to get baby to latch well.

It can reduce your milk production as it does not allow the nipple to be stimulated properly. That said if baby will not latch properly and that is what works go for it!! Good for you for doing your best to breast feed your baby! Good luck!

I had to use one all of the time too ( frusterating isn't it :-0 ) I don't think it messes with your production, at least it didn't mine, but I think that it is supposed to have a high risk of infection.
Have you tried starting out with the sheild then once let down has been acheived taking it off?

You are perfectly right doing what works...and each person and each baby is different.
What you need to realize is that you are giving your baby what no other person on earth can give the baby....the nutrition that is considered Mother Nature's finest.
I congratulate you on not giving up...don't ever give up....and I believe GOD will bless all of your dreams!
