I'm a cashier at a store and a man came in (a customer) and while I was checking him out, he said something of a sexual nature. I was really offended. Should I call the store's hotline and report him? Should I talk to my boss about this? What should I do? I'm really scared.

I read the employee handbook and it said that an investigation would be conducted if I were to call the hotline.

I called the cops today and they couldn't do anything about it. I also got a phone call from a big wig at the main home office.

Because you are a woman, you would probably get away with reporting him.
It all depends on what he said, and in what manner it was meant. If you go around reporting everyone who makes a pass at you or flirts with you, you will end up single and angry with the world.
Only you can decide what the intentions behind his words were, because no-one else heard it. Put it in context, and get some perspective on it. Would you feel the same if someone you drool over in women's magazines had said the same thing to you?
Besides... "Sexual Nature" is a very broad field... For all I know he could have said "You look very pretty"...

You should talk it over with your supervisor. If the man talks to you in the same manner you could say"comments like that make me very uncomfortable", walk away and get your supervisor. Your supervisor should talk to the customer and inform him that the store does not tolerate sexual harrasment from customers or employees.
Bottom line - you don't have to stay in an uncomfortable situation. Walk away.

You need to immediately report it to your supervisor. Years ago I watched training films about this very issue... the rules haven't changed... report it at once and let your supervisor handle it.

If hesays it again...ask him "Please repeat that, the microphone in the cash register did not pick that up the last time you said it, asshole"
Watch his face and enjoy his discomfort...if you can't get justice, get revenge. If he complains, deny it and focus on the sexual harassment.
