people who are in jail can't vote cause they are wards of the state, people in mental hospitals can not vote becasue they are wards of the state. Clearly anyone on government assistance has one agenda in mind, vote for people who will keep giving me more government assistance. Clearly their votes are tainted, why is it they are allowed to vote?

An interesting question and opinion!

However, folk in mental hospitals usually cannot think for themselves! Folk in jail are presumed to be criminals and thus, do not think for themselves!

The rest of your opinion is interesting and deserves more evaluation! However, by law, they have not commited a crime! Thus, they should be allowed to vote in an election!

Yes, their votes may be tainted, but aren't all of ours? We want what is best for ourselves, the heck with the rest! Since when do "we" consider the wellbeing of others? Okay, now and then, some of us do! But, all in all, we vote what is best for us, as we come first!

Can you honestly disagree?

Just MHO,

Hope this helps,

It's the same reason that members of corporations and big business who receive tax breaks and government contracts for a much higher percentage of your tax dollar can vote. Their motives are much more tainted and they have actual power because it is their friends they are voting for. Clearly, you have prejudged all people on assistance and clustered them into one simple and stereotyped category. If you think a little more deeply and humanly you will move on to thinking about something more important than if poor people get the vote or not. By the way, the reason your examples cannot vote is not because they are "wards of the state".

Lots of people have questionable agendas, but they are still allowed to vote. There's no getting around that.

As for being wards of the state, I think it's more than just that. It matters why they are wards of the state. A person can be a ward of the state because of a physical or mental handicap, but people with physical handicaps still have the right to vote. People with mental handicaps don't really have the lucidity to vote.

And of course, prisoners are wards because they have broken the law, and once you break the law part of your punishment is that you lose some of your rights.

So I guess to answer your question, they are allowed to vote because they are sane enough and they haven't broken the law, so they deserve the same rights.

People in prison cannot vote because they lost that right when they were incarcerated, but when they complete their sentence (time served and/or parole time) they can petition to have the right restore.

People in mental hospitals have not lost the right to stop voting, however, most cannot make an independent cognitive decision and therefore do not vote. Unless they are a voluntary admission they usually have been court ordered because they are a danger to themselves or others. The only way they would temporarily lose the right to vote is to be declared incompetent and have a guardian of person and property.

A person on government assistance retains all the rights of an American citizen including the right to vote. The support is there for them, for you and for myself, should be have the unfortunately circumstance to need some financial aid. Don't criticize them until you have walked in their shoes.

Compassion seems to have left your cupboard.

People in jail can't vote because they have been convicted of a crime, not because they are wards of the state.

People in mental institutions can vote unless they have been declared mentally unfit - if you're committed because you're suicidal, you can probably still vote, unless you've had your rights revoked by the court

So - people on government assistance can vote as long as they are a citizen and haven't been convicted of a crime, or been declared mentally incompetent.

You might as well ask why 18 year olds that are still in high school can vote, if they're still dependent on their parents and on the government to educate them. They can because it is their constitutional right to do so.

Seriously? No, you can't possibly be serious and just put that question on to instigate people. Are there people who take advantage of the system, yes, but not everyone who receives government assistance does so out of laziness, greed or any other stereo-typical reasons. Don't be ignorant. And I have a question for you....how about college students who receive financial aid? They are "tainted" too, right?

I'm sure there are a whole lot of professional parasites on government assistance, but there are also plenty of honest hard working people who fell through the cracks and just needed a temporary leg up.
Before you judge everyone else with such a blanket condemnation, you should think to yourself "But for the grace of God, there go I."

People in mental hospitals are not allowed to vote because they are 'not competent (not sane)' to vote, not because they are wards of the state. Prisoners are not allowed to vote because of acts they committed that show they are unable to function as a member of society.

somewhat detrimental people seldom hardship to vote. They experience their votes do no longer count extensive type besides. every person has government advice in some way. every person have the desirable to pass to college, use public roads, assume our trash to be picked up on time, have bridges that pass rivers, have paper money that it would not take 1000 of to purchase a candy bar, and so on, and so on, and so on. in case you're talking approximately welfare merely, think of of the corporate welfare and the government itself. we've congressmen who vote their very own pay and perks. are you able to do this? maximum have somewhat been in place of work long adequate to get rich. in addition they have loose wellness care, barber shop, bowling, wellness center, you call it, interior the construction so as that they do no longer ought to climate the climate like we do to get there. they do no longer must be in place of work greater suitable than one term with a view to get retirement which the taxpayer will pay for. quite good one too. Plus i might assume a competent lots of them get social secure practices whilst they retire additionally. Then there are the candies from lobbyists to 'purchase their votes'. i don't comprehend if it somewhat is government advice nevertheless, (the lobbying area it somewhat is). you're precise i think, the parasites are controlling the host, are not they? i think of you're watching the incorrect end of society to blame for despite that's you're blaming them for.

They have that right if they are citizens. I heard on the news tonight that some of the men who blew up the World Trade Center were registered to vote in the USA. THAT is more scary for me.
