It's good both ways -- so you have to judge from the context of the sentence. "I slept with my girlfriend last night" has a 95 percent chance of being about romance. OTOH, "I went shopping with my girlfriends" has a 95 percent chance of being platonic, because most people do not have multiple romantic interests.
The sad thing is that there are a lot of dirty minds out there who have sex on the brain. When you talk to this minority of people, then you either have to keep explaining, "No, not my sweetie -- she's just a friend" or you have to learn to avoid those gutter-brains.
IMO, it's really nobody's business if a girlfriend is romantic or platonic -- if the speaker needs to make it clear, s/he will in other ways.

It can still mean a platonic female friend, it depends on the context it is used in. Sometimes lesbians like tot use the word partner instead.

I always call my female friends girlfriends in conversation with others. Some may jump to the conclusion that I have dated this person, but most semi-educated people do not make this leap.

I use it to refer to a group of my female friends. To me, it would only sound like a woman was refering to a romantic interest if I knew that she had a romantic preference for women.

It can mean just a friend. I am a lesbian and we do talk about our gfs like you all talk about your bfs, but in this case, I am sure she means it in a friend kind of way, just like we do when we talk about our friends who happen to be other women.

if used as the singular possesive, 'My GF', then one might assume romance
in the plural or with the non-possessive 'a GF', then its plationic
