FA Cup is the more prestigious of the two. All teams in English football are eligible to enter. The lower your rank, the earlier you enter. The lowest non-league teams enter in the early qualifying rounds and teams from the Championship and Premiership enter in round three.
The League Cup, also known as the Carling Cup, is open to all teams participating in the Football Leagues, that is, Premiership, Championship, League One and League Two. Non-Premiership teams enter from the first round, and the Premiership clubs enter in the second round. However, clubs participating in European competition that season are given a bye and enter in the third round, to reduce fixture congestion.

Poltak M is completely and utterly wrong! There are two cup competitions in England, the F.A. Cup and League Cup which has had many sponsors over the years and changes it's name to whatever the current sponsor is, and currently it is Carling, so it is the Carling Cup and is very inferior to the FA Cup. For instance Arsenal only play there reserve players in the Carling Cup. I still call it the League Cup like the old days.
