experience is the best teacher. Get ahold of a garage and ask them if you can learn from them. If you want to get into auto mechanics...a vocational institute is best.

You can learn much there...as for me...I started working on my dad's cars when I was about 10 yrs old. brakes and such. It was trial and error on my part...as dad didn't tell me how to do it...he just told me what to do..as in "go replace the brakes on my car".

Is this the best way to learn? Probably not...but I did it...and to date...I am one of the best mechanics around because I'm not afraid of just doing it.

With that said...these days..."mechanics" are merely parts replacers....of course the car systems kind of make them that way...electronic parts are for the most part not repairable...only replaceable. But build an engine...find one that can be rebuilt...take it apart and put it back together..and do it right. Now that's a mechanic. Tear apart a manual transmission..fix it and fix it right...that's a mechanic. Have an electrical problem..and it is a parts replacement...well it does take knowledge...but that's not a mechanic...a mechanic is someone who can take it apart...figure out how it works...fix the problem and it works....that's a mechanic.

Kid, I couldn't tell you what school to go to, but if you learn the basics, you'll be OK. Changing motors is more difficult now than in the past. You have to make sure that your wiring is marked and it's best if you can just disconnect the loom at a central point. If not, unplug all connectors going to the motor after marking them and/or making a diagram and then lay the loom to the side. Take off your radiator and heater hoses. Unbolt the torque converter, exhaust, fuel system, and then the bell housing bolts. Then you should be ready to unbolt the motor mounts. You may have to pull the radiator. I always do. Every vehicle is different. If you have a Mystake or Contrast, then you drop the motor out of the bottom of the car with the tranny attached. Try to learn about 2 strokes, computer control systems, and the new band drive transmissions. That will get you into specialized repairs. Learn about A/C, you will benifit from it. Good luck kid.

The best way to learn is to get out there and take stuff apart and look at it really. Sorry, don't know of any website to help you, but go to autozone and get a chilton guide to any car. They are pretty helpful. I looked into UTI when I got outta high school because I was interested in thier mercedes program. Although wyotech I hear has a good program too.

A word of advise: If you like working on cars. DONT MAKE IT YOUR JOB. It will suck the fun right out of it, and make you hate it.

Hi, I was an ASE tech for 29 years and can give you much advice, But as far as attending school, Think about it as the worst tech's I ever employed were tech school grads. Some of what they teach is very wrong, and it is a hard life, with little rewards. You do a tune and it is your fault if their tire goes flat in the next 30 days.If you want to know anything about your engine swat contact me and I will try to help you.But just buy a good manual and learn what you can, self knowelege is Power.
