Since the constant term is negative, the signs must be opposites. A little trial and error shows the answer to
be (x + 6)(x - 1)

We know that the only way to get a negative number by multiplication is to multiply a positive and a negative number together, so the -6 at the end was created by multiplying a positive and a negative number, so one sign is positive and one is negative. Then we ask ourselves, what two numbers multiply to make -6 and add to make +5? The answer in this case is +6 and -1, so to factor your equation, we get (x+6)(x-1).

x2 + 5x - 6 = 0

x2 + 6x - 1x - 6 = 0
x ( x + 6 ) -1 ( x + 6 ) = 0
( x + 6)( x - 1 ) = 0
x+6 = 0 or x-1 = 0
x= - 6 x = +1
