Opinions differ. I for one think that the shot fired in the US which was heard around the world and reverberated was the shot that felled Abe Lincoln. The shot that started the American Revolution, even if an important event, was not unique in that similar movements have gone on and will go on around the world. Similarly the shot that felled JFK was a purely American affair. Even if everybody in the world sympatheised the even did not have any international implications. As against this the shot that felled Abe Lincoln was a shot against liberation of man from slavery. It was the first instance of abolition of abolition of slavery in World History and gave a lead to all others to follow in the footsteps The shot that felled Abe was a vain attempt too stop the steps on the path of liberation and so is the loudest one coming out of America.

The phrase in United States history comes from the opening stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson's Concord Hymn (1837), and describes the impact of the battle at Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, on April 19, 1775. The entire stanza is:
By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
Here once the embattled farmers stood;
And fired the shot heard 'round the world.
"The shot heard 'round the world" is a famous phrase that has come to represent several historical incidents throughout world history. The line is originally from the opening stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson's Concord Hymn (1837), and referred to the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Later, in Europe and the Commonwealth of Nations, the phrase became synonymous with the shot that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and plunged Europe into the First World War.

I believe 1776, at any rate that egotistical claim was made circa the Battle, more like a skirmish, at Lexington and Concord!
