Well I have been a painting contractor for about 15 years, not only can it profitable, but it's nice to be able to take time off when needed or wanted, to spend time with family, putz around the house or just to go relax.
If you are in an area which is building and such is a benefit, but don't count on getting tons of work from just any home owners, because it does cost a bit sometimes to do a house if needs alot of prep work.
And you can't just start by thinking hey I know hot to paint, it's alot more to it than that.
Example, if it's 90 degrees out and muggy is your exterior stain going to penetrate like it should or cook in the sun or sag and blister from the heat and moisture combined, how cold can latex paint get to before I can't paint. What type of paint to do a exterior steel door.
Person wants latex solid stain used over his other stuff, but what is it? Alot of different scenarios to consider not just slinging a brush and roller.
New cedar deck a person wants painted what are you going to use, primer 1st, buzz wrong answer you can't paint a new cedar deck or anydeck for that matter, new decks has natural oils and chemicals seeping out for 6 months if you painted it it would just flake off cuz the oils would be pushing out ward and you just trapped them in and only place to go is thru your new paint job thus causing blisters and cracks in your new job, home owner pissed at you, gonna get bad rep and name will be bad from word of mouth.

It can be if you are also going to do interior painting. People have been into remodeling their homes and customizing the paint in each room of a house. It will probably be profitable to just have a painting service for any type of dwelling (not just houses). Companies typically hire a painting company to paint their offices when needed.

It sure can be. I have a co-worker who makes plenty of money on the side painting homes (exterior and interior). Good Luck :-)
