Hi Jess,

The following may be a bit long to read, but it is worth the time. It is an essay, not a quick blog answer that may help answer your question toward the end.

For many reasons. One is so that you will understand your culture and how the world came to be the way it is today. By understanding this you not only can impress your friends and strangers, but you also will understand something about how certain cycles continue to repeat themselves in human history. This brings me to my second point which is that the more everyone knows about the history of the world the better they will be able to learn from the mistakes made by others and hopefully to spot things such as the rise of the Nazi party in Germany and help stop those things from happening again...or spot when things are good and right and give your support to them.

Because you don't want to be ignorant and not know things about what happened previous to your time that shaped the world as it is today.

Also, it is quite entertaining to see how stupid and unpredictable humans are. Being able to know what happened and then looking at previous events and decisions makes it very interesting to wonder what would have happened and how the world would be today if a different decision had been made.

Because it is easy and gives you easy grades most of the time. It is interesting and funny to see that people act just like others before them even when they think they are first ones to do it. You understand a lot of the events that have happened before. You sound smart talking to others if you can incorporate history into you everyday talks.

Because if you don't learn from history, you are condemned to repeat it.

As an example, George W Bush learned nothing from Viet Nam.
