no it does not count and they dont stop gameplay because it might be a distraction to the players.

Once a player on either team knocks the ball through the net in the wrong direction, it is treated as an out-of-bounds play. The ball is awarded to the opposite team. And as mentioned by an earlier post, it will be a technical foul if this is done intentionally.
