Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie got about 40 famous singers together and called themselves USA for Africa to make an album to aid the starving people in Ethiopia. It was the first time something like that was done.
The song you are referring to, "We Are The World" was played by all the radio stations in America, including the talk stations, in support of the cause. In a matter of weeks, the death rate for children in Ethiopia was down by 80%.
In a matter of the same time, everyone in America was sick to death of the song.

I know you didn't ask for any of that information, so here's the answer to your question with a visual of the famous stars who took part in this powerful piece of music history.

they were called USA for Africa...the song was called We Are the World...look it up on lyrics.com or leoslyrics.com...cheers

the lady below (theZaylady) said it was the first time anything like that had been done, but she is wrong...Band Aid from Europe was the first one (the song was Do They Know It's Christmas) and was started by Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats ( he is the guy who started the whole Live Aid cause) then USA for Africa (We Are The World), then the Canadians did one and were called Northern Lights (song was called Tears Are not Enough) and then the Heavy metal Artists did one which were musicians from all over the world and their compilation was Hearing Aid ( song was We Are Stars)

There comes a time when we need a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth - you know love is all we need

( CHORUS )
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, send'em you your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us
By turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

( REPEAT CHORUS )

When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let's realize
That one change can only come
When we stand together as one

( REPEAT CHORUS AND FADE )

To this day I just love to hear "We Are The World" - the melody is so simple but beautifully arranged and produced by Daddy Q. Okay, so it woud not hit the top 40 in the 90's, but re-produce it and replace the singers with those like Puff Daddy, R. Kelly, Mariah Carey, Madonna, etc, and chances are it's going all the way to the top! Here's a list of the singers next to their lyric from the 1985 version. . .
