Blinking causes the inner upper eyelid to moisten the surface of the corneas to prevent eye dryness. Also, it is a reflex to protect the eye when foreign objects touch the corneas.

Our eyelid is like a windshield wiperblade for our eye. It's to keep stuff from settling on there, plus it remoisturizes our eyeball everytime it goes down.
