.............for the same reason that there is only a finite amount of food and fuel and atmosphere.
The only ****up on this planet is the so-called intelligent life-forms who inhabit it, treat it like it is an infinite resource and **** it up for the rest of the inhabitants and all our descendants.

I'm just wondering why this comes as a big surprise. The Earth is finite, the solar system is finite, even the galaxy is finite.
But as a couple of the other answers have said, the most important factor about the water is that it is recycled. Rivers take it down to the ocean. Rain puts it back on the land. And in between times it goes through plants and animals enabling life.
I've got to disagree about it being a '**** up'. If there was an infinite amount, but it was all locked up inside rocks, or contaminated with arsenic, or dangerously irradiated THAT would be a '**** up'.

Do you know something that we don't? Has someone stolen all the water and is secretly bottling it up, or hiding it in an attempt at world domination? Shoot. This could be serious.
Where would they hide it I wonder. And will this push up the price of Perrier? Maybe I should go get some shares......
You may have stumbled on something here. If water resources are finite - as you quite rightly say - then we should all start drinking it fast as we can, before the bad guys get hold of it all.
This is indeed a f**k up.
I thought that only outer space was infinite. But OK - off to buy those perrier shares.

The earth is 75% water. I don't think we'll run out any time too soon. The earth is the only planet in our solar system that can harbor life. Venus is too hot, Mars is too cold. Venus has no water what-so-ever, and Mars only has about 10% water. Also remember that the earth is a rather small planet when you compare it to the gas giants. The water is actually replenished by the rains. So, there actually is an infinite source of water on the earth.

Yes. There is a finite supply of water here on Planet Earth.
Why! Where else do you think it would come from?
As for it being a '****up,' just think, what you drink - tea, coffee, beer, spirits or water, it has been through the kidneys of some living creature and excreted many many many times before you got your lips around it.
Oh, yes. When you go to the seaside for your annual holidays, or swim in the ocean, that's the toilet for all manner of creatures that live in it.
Think about it a while. Maybe!

Strictly speaking does it really matter if the water within earth's atmosphere is finite or not ? We will always have the same amount of water it just depends no the percentage on the surface at any given time.

There is...but guess what? It gets recycled...we've been using the same water since the planet was formed.
