Pitch is a tar-like substance that is naturally found (like oil) usually in open pits. It is so black that it is synonymous with the noun black and is often used in conjunction with the word black to make more emphasis to the blackness of the object or situation, often referring to the absence of light. e.g. inside a cave or mine or just the complete darkness at night (like during a power outage)

The term "pitch" in ancient times was a very sticky substance used in much the same way as we use caulk today.
It had two very different sources. One was tree sap, the other was tar.
Tar is black.

Pitch is the old word for tar. Like when they used to tar and feather people. Tar is black..so...pitch black.
