It decided to give Missouri a miss next time. Everyone there thought it was Elvis coming back on a flying saucer.

Halley's Comet will not be coming to Missouri. It will be in the sky, near the sun. (Actually, it will start out far from the sun, pass close to the sun, and then move away again.)

When near the sun, it will be visible from any part of the earth where the sun is visible (i.e., ALL parts of the earth, except those near the pole where it is fall or winter).

When?
Well, it comes every 76 years. It was visible in 1910 and again in 1986. So it should be visible again in 2062. It will be visible for a period of months, so it might stretch into 2061 or 2063; I'm not sure which (but you could Google it).

Note, however, that the comet gets worn away each time it passes the sun. It was not easy to see in 1986 (I can attest to that), and will be even harder to see in 2062. Hope you get to see it.

Halley's comet has an average cycle of 76 years and, as it last appeared in 1986, it is due back again late 2061 or early 2062.

It is impossible to predict exactly when it will return as its orbit is greatly perturbed by the major planets, and this can make a few years difference in its cycle. For the same reason it will be impossible to predict whether it will be visible in Missouri or not.

I'll be very happy if I'm still around to see it ! hope you do.

The next time Halley's Comet will be close to the earth will be 2062, but I seem to recall that it will not be well situated then to be seen from the northern hemisphere (same problem as during the 1986 pass). But the pass after that, in 2138, will be a good one for the northern hemisphere.
