Because in their business, the faster they get the news out, the bigger the audience they get. It's not like back during the Carter race, when I spent hours collecting interesting facts about the election, and he won before we went on the air. THAT was disappointing!

Good question, as I watch the news right now I'm wondering the same thing. In fact, they projected one winner on CNN a few minutes ago that had 47% of the vote with 1% reporting. Thing is, another candidate had 52%.

Basically, as illogical as it is, generally they're going to be right. That's because they're basing the projections off the exit polls AND the votes counted. Generally the news stations won't project a winner unless they have substantial evidence. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they'll get a few wrong tonight.

To get a feeling for a large group, you actually only have to take a very small sampling, assuming that sample is representative. (You'll learn this is you take a statistics course or study probability.) Hopefully the outlets making the predictions are doing so responsibly so as not to discourage late voters.

Usually they'll only do that in races where the exit polls showed one candidate massively in the lead. If it's at all close, they'll hold off predictions.

I don't know, but I think that's too soon to predict a winner.

Exit polls is how they project winners. They are something to consider but not to be taken literally.

Well.....

They gotta talk about Sumtin'! They need to fill that air time with some kind of jabber.

Quite frankly, doesn't interest me until at least 51% of the votes are in.

Journalistic Irresponsibility. Kerry is living proof exit polls are useless.
