Uncle Tom's Cabin is fiction, but many things in the novel actually did happen. For example, slaves were sold "down South" when their owners wanted to get rid of them. People were put up for auction as characters in the book are. However, characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin are either very good or very bad. There is no middle ground. It is a very powerful novel that helped open the eyes of people to the horrors of slavery, even though it is a fictional story, it's roots are in truth.

As per the author's own note, it is fiction. But it would be based on a certain amount of fact, as all authors borrow liberally from the real life situations and characters that they encounter. Since the book is about African Americans in the era of slavery, I am sure there is a large amount of real life in it which due to prevailing circumstances the author had to cloak as fiction.

Nonfiction: Diary of a youthful woman: Anne Frank is marvelous. alongside with Fever 1793. Fiction: working Out of Time is likewise extraordinary. It jogs my memory particularly some the action picture, The Village.
