as previously mentioned, I'm reading through "THE GODFATHER". i saw the movie a while back ago (2001, give or take), & so remembering who played who (Marlon Brando-Vito Corleone, Al Pachino-Michael Corleone, etc) helps me visualize the characters & the scenes better. but then the draw back is that i know allot of "what's going to happen next & how". which is a drag for me when I'm really getting into it & hanging on every word.
so what do you think?

In my opinion, if you read the book first its better. The details and nuances that are conveyed through a book can never be replicated in the movie - for example, the character's thoughts. Thus, having read the book, you are able to appreciate and understand the movie better.

I never really thought about the disappointment of seeing the movie after, but those answers do make sense. However, what I like about reading the book first is that it is your imagination that helps you visualize. Vito Corleone may look completely different in your mind if you didn't see the movie. Everything may seem different. That is usually why the movie disappoints, because it all "looks" wrong to you. Also, I find with horror stories that your imagination can make things very believable but then on film they just look goofy and not scary. I guess my final vote is read the book first. Heck ya never know if a new book will even be a movie.

Watch the movie first. If you read the book you will be expecting something from the book that the screenplay writer may not have considered important enough to the plot. The other way around, you can read the book to fill in the plot points and details the movie could not capture.
I made the mistake of reading Bourne ultimatum before the movie was release. There is an inconsistency in the third book compared the first and second movie. Now I have to go back and find out how this is explained in the books and not the movies.

I think it depends on the book/movie. Most of the time I read the book, then see the movie. And then I spend the whole movie angry about things that happen differently or don't work with the book. Usually, I try not to see the movie (unless I previously heard the movie was really good), because it usually disappoints me.
But the times I've seen the movie and then read the book, I usually was relatively happy, but that may have to do with only reading books of movie I enjoyed.

Normally, I would say read the book first, the the Godfather movie has become such a classic that it really stands alone without the book. I think in situations like that, the most interesting part of the book is the little explanations or internal dialog that goes on that they can't get into the movie.

I think it's better to read the book first. Because most of the time Hollywood will change the movie so that it will make money and by the time that they get through with it it's nothing like the book. It might not happen all the time but for the most I think it does.

As the saying goes... the book is always going to be better. So it is more a matter of preference. I watched the first three Harry Potters, then read the 4th 5th, and 6th books. I will read the 7th book when it comes out, and I will watch all the movies, as they are released...I try to keep my opinions as separate as possible, but there alway will be a bit of comparing. As for the DaVinci Code... I read the book, and with the reviews I have heard, and read, I am waiting to rent it... If it is as bad as they say it is, it's only a couple bucks.

If the book is based on the movie. The movie is probably better. But in general all books that are made into movies are better than the movies because you can focus more on what is happening in a book. In a movie based on a book you lose nuances and plot settings because if they made a movie based on the actual book and tried to depict everything in the book in the movie, the movie would be a couple of weeks long.

Most times the movie differs from the book, the script writers needing to not only condense but to ensure it's up the the expectations of the average movie goer, ie filled with some combination of action, romance, comedy, tragedy etc.
If I haven't already read the book, I try to wait until after I've seen the movie, because I know I won't be disappointed. But it's up to you.

I almost always read the book first. But then lots of times I like the book so much that I decide not to see the movie at all. Like with the Davinci Code... I heard some not-so-great reviews about the movie so I haven't seen it yet.
