This is the real answer even though very few people understand it.
Western Europeans, specifically Britain, passed along a system of PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS that enabled the creation of wealth, thus development.
After WWII and the Korean War, those private property rights were then implemented in Japan and Korea, thus they are also developed.
Private property rights are the foundation for development and wealth creation.

I was going to point out that Japan, Korea and Tiawan aren't doing that bad without Europeans. But Zak explained the real reason better than I could.
The only thing I can add is it wasn't all Europe mainly the English. Read about a philosopher named John Locke. They were the first to figure out that free people were more productive and freedom requires property rights. Us Americans got that idea from the English. Now the British, Americans, Canadians, and Austrialians are really the only places that fully understand the advantage of this system.

even thought Asia and the mid east have about a 4000-5000 year head start when it comes to developing societies. I think culturally they have limited themselves to a point where Europeans, the new kids on the block, have left them in the dust (especially over the last 400 years).
Asians are notoriously xenophobic, Africans and middle-easterners are still basically tribal in nature when it comes to politics and economics.

America was established relatively late in world history. We have only been around for 230 years. When you compare that to some of the ancient civilizations that's pretty new.
