It is a peninsula that sticks out into the Gulf of Mexico. Most hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean form off the coast of Africa, inwhich they travel over the Atlantic ocean.

Majority of hurricanes travel over Florida to reach the warm waters of the Gulf. Then Florida may get hit again when the hurricane travels back over the state and travels up the coastline via Gulf Stream
