A pitbull killed a 1 year-old boy recently. The officer in charge of the case was interviewed and said that this was a docile pitbull, one that was not trained to fight. This officer, who also stated that he is a father of 3 children and owns a pitbull himself, said this was the worst assignment he's ever been on.
What do you think of pitbulls? Denver and Toronto have already banned them.

Chikin: that's what was so weird about this case. The officer said the pitbull was peaceful, not trained to fight, yet it still managed to kill a child. The owner was good, the dog was "good," so what's the explanation?

hey Chocolate, that's the point. This "innocent" pitbull killed a child. It was NEVER trained to fight. It was a simple a house dog. It's amazing that even after a child has died, you are still defending the "innocent" pitbull. How many children have to die before you change your mind? 2? 4? 7? 15? 29? 45?

dvplanetwaves, you're not seriously comparing a species that landed on the moon to a dog, are you? Umm, no further comment!

misbehavin165, i admire what you said, you sound well informed. But I have to disagree with you on some points. The child's face was basically eaten off. Now, I'm no expert, but i think takes a lot to take skin off of a human head. So if you deny any "excessive force" was used by the pitbull, I'll have to disagree.
Second, you said you have to watch pitbulls 24/7, and any dog has this capability. When was the last time a poodle killed someone?
And why aren't we allowed to have wolves or lions as pets? Because they are unpredictable and will rip your head off WITHOUT any kind of training from an owner. They are like that by nature -- same as pitbulls.

I hate them and think that those that have them, especially around children are ignorant. I don't care how docile a person thinks they are, they continuously prove themselves to be capable of mauling and killing. To those that have children and own a pit bull, I believe that they should have their children removed from their home.

I own one and had 2. I had to get rid of one. She was docile and great as a puppy and when she got to be about 1 & 1/2 she got agressive. She and my older one had always played and got along well and snap...She attacked my other one. I tryed keeping them away from one another and she lept through a screen door and did it again and almost killed her. They were not trained to fight or anything and both had been through training. They really are iffy dogs. I'm very carefull with my girl. She has never done anything but if strangers or cable guys or anyone not around her all the time comes in she's put into her crate.
I'm reading others answers and she wasn't abused or neglected in any way. I have 2 acres of land, she had plenty of exercise and someone is always home. My animals are never alone for more than a few hours.

I think there are 2 sides of this story. The dead childs and the dogs. And BOTH sides need to be looked at.
Dogs in general are much stricter with their young than we humans are with ours. And their tolerance for bad behavior is far less than ours.
This pit was docile which tells me that it's owners raised it properly but they are negligent in not carefully watching the child and the dog together.
It's almost a sure bet that this pit is so mellow that it's owners did'nt think twice about leaving the child and dog unattended. The child probably did something to the dog that hurt it and the dog defended itself in the only manner it had at it's disposal.I'm sure you'll agree that it would take little to kill a one year old child so lets rule out exess force.
Dogs correct their young by grabbing them by the neck and holding them until they're still and calm. The child was probably thrashing about trying to get away and hurt the dog further so more force was use to still it until it was calm.In the dogs mind it did nothing wrong. But I'm sure it will pay for the deed with it's own life.I find that extremely sad.Two lives lost because of misunderstanding.
I don't now nor have I ever or will I ever own a pitbull. They require way too much exercise.I'm too old to keep up with one.But I have owned many breeds on the dangerous dog lists.Any dog is capable of such an act.
When you bring a dog home you have to keep one eye on it 24/7 to keep it from harm and out of mischief. It's like having a toddler underfoot until the day it passes on.People need to understand this and research the dog breed they want BEFORE they bring it home so they know what that breed requires to maintain a happy, healthy state. Both mentally and physically. And no one in their right mind should ever leave such a small child unattended with any animal.
Peoples stupidity and laziness never cease to amaze me!
Everyone wants to get rid of the pitbulls cos they're so unpredictable and dangerous.BAH!
Wiping them out is nothing more than a doggie halocaust!
It was wrong when Hitler tried to wipe out the Jews. But it's o.k. to kill off a certain breed of dog because people are too stupid and lazy to properly care for and maintain them?Let's not ever admit to being negligent either. The dog can't talk.It can't tell it's version so we'll just blame it and it'll suffer for our ignorance instead of us having to pqay for our misdeeds!
I imagine it is the worst assignment that officer has ever been on.Poor guy is torn between the dog and the kid.Who to feel worst for that is.
As a pit owner as well as a father himself I can't imagine how sick he still must feel over this.

I believe that certain breeds of dogs are more aggressive. Pit bulls are known to be highly aggresvie. BUT the person responsible is the owner of the dog. They shouldnt have allowed the dog around a child that was about the same size of mid day meal. They are still animals

I've always found the pitbulls I've known to be a little schitzo. They're nice as pie, playing fetch, sleeping on the bed, then they're like evil...they get so mad so easily.
Ontario (maybe even Canada, not sure) banned pitbulls. The ones that are alive have to be spayed/neutered, and they all have to be muzzled when outside, tied up or not.
I watched a friend get malled really badly by a german shepperd (SP?) once...I was 5 or 6. It was horrific. She had to have 36 stitches in her bottom lip alone. It was awful, and it could have easily been me. We were playing in a mud puddle, not even facing the dog when it approached. It grabbed her from behind and just let rip on her.
Any dog can attack, but pitbulls are almost wired for it in my opinion.

I LOVE my pitbull and she is the most behaved and intuitive dog I have ever owned...SO well behaved. She has had unleashed dogs run up to her and jump on her and all she does is look at them like they are crazy and backs up...she does not want to fight and that is because no aggressive behaviors were ever tolerated from her. Its in how you raise em! I think the best way of dealing with this is to inact stiffer penalties for animal abuse/neglect in order to discourage irresponsible dog ownership which leads to injuries. I'm talking jail time and very high fines.

Pitbulls are how you raise them! Even if the pit was not trained to fight, it still took a life, and for that it shoud be put down.

Dogs are a reflection of their environment. Raise a dog well and you'll have a good dog, abuse or neglect the dog and you'll have problems. The one exception is that pitbulls have incredible jaw strength. Once they bite they can really hurt someone. An aggressive chihuahua could not do as much damage as a pit.

pitbulls are very dangerous and very protective of there propery. They should always be tied up with a short chain behind a fence. they have very bad tempers and won't let go of the victim til they are dead or the dog is forced off.
