My baby's umbilical cord fell off today, he has a very small hernia which I read that if it is small it will go away in a few days. Its also still kinda gooey and a little bloody, is this normal, I read it is for the next couple of weeks, but I would like to hear it from someone who knows. Also I have just been giving him a sponge bath, can I give him a normal bath now, and can I put the diaper on normal now (where it covers his belly button)?

My youngest was like that. He had an "outie" for about 3 months after his birth. His navel almost seemed like it hadn't closed completely. The pediatrician said not to worry about it, and to continue to put alcohol on the navel until it closed up. He also told me it was okay to bathe him after the cord stump fell off, but he did tell me to not cover it with the diaper until it closed.

I'm not a doc but my 7 month old daughter had the same thing. Bloody and gooey for about a week after. Just keep it clean...I was told by my doc not to use alcohol, just a q tip and clean water. Baths are fine just dry off the area well and gently. Your best bet is to call your doctor in the morning and either talk to the nurse there or ask to see the doctor. Baby will be fine overnight. Good luck and congrats on your baby!

I would say check with your pediatrician first but I think you can give him a bath after the cord falls off. I stumbled upon a great bathtub called the Primo Eurobath which you will find your baby splashing like crazy in, it is so funny because it holds a LOT of water. Plus you can have your baby in there hands-free believe it or not. Of course you want to be safe and don't wander off but hands-free baths are quite a relief after handling a little slippery baby for a while...

i have 4 daughters my second and 4th had/have herniated bellybuttons. my 3 year olds went away by the time she was a month or two, my youngest(2 months) still has hers and (i think) its bad, but the doctor wont do anthing right now cause she said they usually heal themselves by 1 year.
my youngest also had bleeding belly button, the doc said as long as thier is no puss, and its not bleeding freely(aka a lot) that its not a problem.
yes, you can have the diapeer over the belly button but if its irritated, it may be better to have low for a while longer.
its ok, but giving a full bath will increase the gooeyness of the belly button.
hope this reasures you.

I'm not a dr. but I would call your pediatrician to get a really good answer, when my daughters fell off it wasn't gooey or bloody. I still waited a week to give her a normal bath.

Washing it with just salt and water helps. My sons navel looked red and gooey after it fell off. The nurse gave me a saline wash which is the same as salt and water it helped. And just fold the top of the diaper down fresh air helps dry it out.

Yes, but if it doesn't heal in a few days, check with a doctor. my grandson had a problem that kept oozing, the doctor put some medicine on it, and it cleared up. I would be careful with the diaper, so it doesn't rub on it. and yes he can have a bath. (oh don't be surprised if he (or she) doesn't enjoy it. that takes a few times, but boy it is so much fun when they do.

That is perfectly normal, bathing is ok, just try to keep the diaper from rubbing and irritating it.
