I have a friend in the US who I have wanted to text a few times. I have their number but I have no idea how to text an American number. For mobiles do you still the international code +01 or 001 at the start or do you need to replace something like UK numbers?

all nos in the US are dialled 1 333 333 4444

to dial the US from the UK on a landline you need to dial 00 then then 1 333 333 444, from a mobile you can use + instead of 00

Is the number you have definitely a mobile ? If it is then you don't have enough nos. - could it be a landline & they neglected to tell you/assumed you would know the first three, which is the state/area code ie Manhattan is 212 .... if this is the case & you know where they live then find the area code & try calling them by putting the area code between the 00 1 & the number you have.

If you use the UK MOBILE you will be making an international call in ALL situations whether in the UK or the US, with roaming on the number you dial is the same as if in the UK. If you are in the US and dial the UK with the MOBILE same again, NO International prefix as YOU are effectively still in the UK so 07890 *** *** If you use a cell (Yes I am bilingual English & American) it is International to the UK, Local or long distance within the US If your phone is UNLOCKED a locally bought prepaid simcard (not familiar with US) in the US would enable you to make "NON international" calls to US numbers.

In America you have to dial the 3-digit area code before dialing the 7-digit phone number.

An easier and less expensive way is to go to their carriers website and text them from there, just put in 1 and there area code and then the number.

I don't think you have to use the international code numbers... just the area code. It would look something like
313.555.555 (the first three numbers are known as the area code and they serve as city/state locations).
