D&C stands for "dilation and curettage". It removes excess endometrial tissue for women with PCOS, is used for some cases of mild fibroid tumors, and in cases of incomplete miscarriage.
It is NOT a common abortion procedure these days. It requires heavy sedation, and vacuum aspiration is much easier and safer. A woman who's had a D&C probably had a miscarriage or some other medical condition.
The doctor dilates the cervix and inserts instruments to scrape the inside of the uterus.

You might get a very complete answer from a physician (or you might not), but I think what you really need to know is the following:
D&C is "dilettation & curettage," and it is a process in which the surgeon (generally a gynecologist) scrapes the walls of a woman's uterus. This can be done in an attempt to resolve various feminine problems (e.g., see "dysmennorhea"), but is most commonly done as a form of abortion in the early stages of pregnancy.
So if someone says that she had a D&C done, she is probably saying that she had an early abortion.

I had a D&C when I was pregnant the first time. It's when you miscarry a baby and the drs. have to go in you and scrape all the dead cells out when you lose a baby. Of course you are given drugs so you don't feel the pain.

It is basically getting your uterus cleaned. They scrape the walls to remove all of the yucky stuff. Also it is common to have it done to remove precancel cells and after a miscarriage. It is also done if you are having trouble conceiving.

Curettage of the uterus (womb) is the scraping of the lining of the uterus (the endometrium). The procedure is commonly known as dilation and curettage or D&C.

A D&C is when the uterus is "scraped" out after a miscarriage or abortion. It's basically removing the placenta and all.
