Yes, I still use a mouse pad. It's like a little parking spot for my mouse

I still use a mouse pad. If the mouse pad is smooth enough for the mouse to move freely, then it is actually easier.

An optical mouse should work on nearly any smooth surface that has at least some variation in appearance. For example, a desk top or table top will usually work well. A mirror will not work well, if at all.

No, optical mice do no longer require mouse pads with the aid of fact they don't have the ball below. I even have an optical mouse yet nevertheless use a pad to guard my table and cuz I even have the padding that protects my wrist from being in an uncomfortable postion.

Depends on the mouse and the pad and the surface you use it on.
Optical mice don't work well on shiny/reflective surfaces. If the surface is shiny or rough, use a cloth pad to provide a nice smooth surface for the optical sensor to 'see'.
Some companies make surfaces that are specifically designed for LED or Laser mice, but are only for the enthusiasts that are looking for the best performance in gaming. i'd say just go with what feels right, if the pad feels good and makes the mouse easier to use, go with a pad; if it doesn't, don't.

You don't need a mouse pad and it won't make any difference on performance either. Assuming of course, your desk is reasonably clean.
