is brown nosing a way of life in the work force ?

i'm a hard worker, and brown nosing has never been in my blood. through my years in the work force ,i've seen my share of brown nosing. for some people it 's their way of life. has people brown nosing affected you at work, or have you done it and always work in your advantage.

It all depends on your point of view. As I have matured, I find myself viewing some things that I used to view as brown-nosing to actually be either respect for authority or simple stewardship. We have to be good followers if we are to ever be good leaders, and once we accept that role, we have begun to prepare ourselves for the next...

...but...some people, and I used to be this way, view an honest attempt to please one's superiors in order to garner their favor as something negative. Sometimes it is, especially if there is little or no tact involved, but most often I believe it is a necessary skill for survival and upward momentum within a company.

Just think about it like this: If you were the boss, would you pay more attention to, be willing to pass your skills and insight to, and give the biggest breaks/perks/raises to an employee who goes out of their way to attended to your needs and recognizes your earned superiority, or someone who just does their job and expects you to reward them based on that alone?

The difference between a brown-noser and an upwardly mobile employee is work ethic. Brown-nosers primarily rely on their butt-kissing skills to get ahead, and trust me, employers recognize that. Upwardly mobile employees do their share of butt kissing, but not until they've proven their work ethic to be worthy of notice by said butts. If you can't learn to accept that moderate catering to authority is a gateway to it, your'e doomed to mediocrity. Keep your "pride", I'll take the promotion; and I'll be crying all the way to my new car.

Unfortunatly, it seems to work that way. People that have the carisma to brown nose seem to have the ability to get a head faster. They also seem to make the connections that others have to work so hard for.
