Rail Roads started way earlier than that...

It was like every nation who is called a superpower, through war against a superpower of the time. In US case the economically devastated rulers of the world: Spain. The Spanish American war occurred around 1898 in it US took out Cuba completely crushing the Spanish navy (US unproven navy against one of the most glorious in the world) and took out the rest of the Spanish colonies in the Pacific and the Caribbean sea. This proved to the rest of the world they had the strength to back up their voice in world affairs. Also US annexed many colonies that belonged to Spain thus becoming an Imperial power.
