Jewelry is the only place I know amethyst to be used. Amethyst is a purple quartz. Sometimes it is superheated to produce yellow quartz--citrine.

In addition to its color being beautiful, amethyst occurs often naturally in large pieces that can be faceted for large, showy gemstones that can be bought at relatively reasonable prices.

Besides Jewlrey I don't think that it has one. Amethyst's only desirable quality is it's unique color.
