i own a repair shop, and yes its sort of important ,it helps keep the heat from the converter from getting too hot on the floor of the vehicle,i have seen them scorch the carper before from getting too hot,,but it does need to be there for safety reasons, and if you remove it you might find the floor of the vehicle getting a little hot, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Allow me to summarize: There two types of catalytic converter heat shields. One between the floor and the converter protects the floor or key areas from the tremendous heat. The other is under the converter ("grass shield") and designed to protect what is under the car from the tremendous heat. You do not want to do without the floor shield. You may get away with skipping the grass shield.

Yes, it's a heat shield. It prevents grass and debris under your vehicle from catching fire. Ever run over a tumble weed or paper driving down the road...?

the main shield on the floorboard is still on, right? well it,s like they say the bottom shield is for protecting against paper or something getting caught under your car as you are driving and catching fire, but just make sure the shield above the converter is on as like dodgeman says, your carpet could catch fire if the conditions are right.

If you stay driving on highways you don't need it. Used for a grass shield and to help cool it.
