Corsets at one time were extremely common. It was just considered another part of a woman's clothing. All those pictures you see of women with powdered wigs and super-tiny waists? Corsets. The early corsets actually used whalebone for the structure. And it's true, over time the constriction damaged internal organs.

Every once in a while, some fashion designer tries to bring the corset back, but (thankfully) it has never caught on.

Many women lived much of their lives with broken ribs. They don't still sell the old-school lace up corsets (unless you're thinking S&M), but some middle age/older women wear wierd spandex-y things around their waists under evening wear. Thankfully, they're no longer considered the norm.
