I'm writing this play to have performed at local art theatre....all proceeds will be going to Sick Kids Foundation. Any suggestions on themes? I was thinking - Invest in children, as they are our future. It kind of interralates with children as a whole, and the sick children who need the support of donations...and foundations like Sick Kids.

The best homemade children's production I ever ran across was "Dream Garden" by a woman running the local YMCA theatre group. She based the story on characters or ideas the kids in her group came up with, and weaved them together. For the shy kids, she even had them sleeping on the swing so they didn't have to say any lines. You did not specify your timeframe. Can you interview some of the kids in the local hospital program and get their favorite dreams, ideas or characters? Then dedicate each scene or song to one of the kids asking for help. It can be a variety, like a music revue or talent show that has different art forms from music to poetry read written by children, or a dance. It will be nice if each scene represents children and their dreams. Some theatre groups use projections on the wall as a backdrop, so you could include children's original artwork.
I think the audience would be thrilled and so would the kids.

How about improv? You could call it "That's Funny", and use the show to show off how even sick kids can have a sense of humor. Get some of the kids to help make a list of ideas, or ask them all in a group to brainstorm ideas. Later, practice a few times, write down the best stuff, and keep practicing. Another good way with young kids is to start with a story and blank out lots of nouns and adverbs. Let them take turns filling out the blanks, and then read it back. You could actually do this in front of an audience. I don't know about you, but I know lots of grown-up and kids will laugh like crazy, and the kids have more fun when they don't have to memorize tons of lines. Have Fun!!!
