If, for example, I insert a cd to burn, and close the cdrom drive, the comp auto restarts with a blue error screen, but as long as the cdrom drive remains closed throughout the session, I can still burn/play the cd. I can eject the cd as well, but once the cdrom door is opened, I can only remove the cd. Placing another cd in the drive will cause the comp to restart. If I don't place another cd in there, nothing happens and it doesn't restart.

Maybe needs a driver update. Could be broken. or the settings on your computer are screwed up.

Cd Rom Causing Computer to Restart.

By your explanation, it seems that for some reason, there is a conflict between your cd rom drive and your Windows Operating System. There are a lot of devices on the market that DO NOT carry Microsoft's approval, simply because it wasnt made to work properly with Microsofts Programs, therefore causing you all kinds of problems. In a way it may seem unfair and that Microsoft is somewhat holding a gun to the manufactures heads, however, this must be done to insure that you, the user is not forced with expensive and frequent repairs due to device and software that causes conflicts with the equipment that you've spend hard-earned money for. Before advising you to run out and spend money on another cd burner, i'd first advise you to remove your rom's setup files from the control panel, systems folder (you'll see 'cd rom drives" at the top). Then after restarting the computer and during bootup, Windows will see the cd rom device and ask permission to install the drivers for the device. Hopefully, the new fresh copy will fix any corrupted files you may have once had on the machine, making it work just fine. If I can help, let me know. Larry RadioShack 01-9590

I don't think its a burner problem, it sounds like you have an autoplay problem. Autoplay launches automatically when you insert a CD. XP looks for the type of CD (audio, pictures, data etc...) and launches or prompts you for an action to perform.
Download a copy of TweakUI: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
Its a microsoft tool that allows you to tweak a few settings. There is an autorun section, i would clear all entries from there and see if it clears up your problem. First look through the list of actions there for each type of media, see if there is any old software that didn't get removed properly, maybe something that you uninstalled previously.
Good luck!

SOunds like a software problem. Try to get a driver update, and check the wires.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
