I am a nurse and I actually work with a doctor who was a mechanic and now is a ER physician. He loves those old Volvo's and drives on to work daily.
Any ways. You can be an RN in 2 years or 4 yrs. When I went to nursing school, they were encouraging everyone to get 4 yr degrees because they said the 2 yr degree would phase out and become obsolete. No way!!! There is such a shortage of nurses they are begging them apply for jobs. The difference is about .20 cents an hour where I work between a BSN prepared RN vs a AAS nurse.
I make about $26 an hour now and I have been in the same job for the last 11 yrs with no plans to leave.
If you want to be a hospital nurse, you have to be able to tolerate a lot of peoples differences and understand its not about passing out BonBons. It is very hard work. I dig out impactions, give enema's, I have had vomit splattered from my hair to my shoes and always keep an extra set of pants in my locker in case someone poops, pukes or bleeds all over me. We have patients who come in with pneumonia and their trachs are bubbling out yellow green mucus and everytime they cough, you are better off to have a pair of goggles on. We take care of a variety of infectious diseases and see everything. I could go on and on and on. Just realize nursing is not the glamour, its very hard work and you work on holidays, weekends, and they say the older nurses tend to "eat their young".
We would love to have you though. My favorite male RN left a degree in forrestry to do t his, and you can too.

Hello. Mechanic work is a very hard job. I feel that if you do want to look into nursing, go for it!!! It pays way better than a mechanic and the benefits are great! To become an RN it takes 2 years with a AA degree and 4 years for a BA degree.

Nursing School can be done at a nursing school (which are usually in hospitals) in as little as 1 and 1/2 years, but if you go for the highest degree, you could be looking at 5 to 7 years. The University of Michigan has a 1 year "Second Career" program at this website: http://www.nursing.umich.edu/academics/second_career/index.html.
As for wages, they vary by your degree, employment location, and experience. For instance, the average RN at a hospital makes about $43,000.00/year
Good luck! And go for it, because I'm guessing from your Avatar that you're a guy and guys are needed in nursing.

lpn-licensed practical nurse is 1 year or less.
rn-registered nurse is 2 years of school, an associate degree.
bsn-bachelor degree in nursing is 4 years and not needed unless you want to do administrative nursing....but your still just an rn.
msn master in nursing and nurse specialties like practitioner or anethesitist are longer.
pays usually !18 to $35 dollars an hour- depending on location and specialty.
some like nurse anethestisit make over $100 a year to start

Check it all out by googling. Many nurses are getting a retirement age and instead of nurses theywill be patients. So, now is a good time to get into nursing and a good time to get promoted in that field.

nursing is a tough job, patient care is tough work, especially cleaning up bladder and bowel incontinence, as well as daily hygiene, etc. of the patients but it also pays well, usually $65,000+ to start right out of a 4 year degree, and there will always be a great job market for RN's
