I've already asked this once, but only got 1 response.

I was just wondering what any teachers thought about having a baby while teaching. When do you think is the best time: due during the school year, requiring leave, or due in May or June, requiring no leave and having the whole summer with the baby.

My husband and I are starting to talk "baby" and are trying to decide what time is the best time to start trying to conceive. Thanks in advance for any advice!

My concern about having a baby at the end of the school year is the process of report cards and decisions made about the next school year. I don't want to miss out on that important part of my job either. A lot happens at the end of a school year, including cleaning my room. That's why I was thinking that March would be good, timed around Spring Break, and taking a leave, plus being able to finish the school year with my class, then going back to quality time with the baby during the summer. I guess its tough no matter when the baby is born.

My husband and I are thinking of trying next summer. The way I really hope it will work out for me is that I will be able to take my maternity leave at the very end of the year so I won't have to come back, and then have all summer with the baby. That way I can maximize my time home with him/her. There's just no way I'd be able to stay at home after that, and that's my scheme to get the most time out of it. Hopefully it'll work. Good luck to you!

I teach 3 yr. old child development and my husband and I have been ttc for about a year now with no luck...I really am not as concerned with when so much as if. I want a baby so bad that timing doesn't matter at this point. We'd be blessed for a baby at any time of the year. Although I do understand your thoughts on timing...It would be great to be able to get pregnant during the year and have the baby at the beginning of summer though, that way you still can work through the last weeks of school and still be home with the baby for the summer. Good luck and God Bless!

If you really have to work after the baby then this is the right choice: May or June, requiring no leave and having the whole summer with the baby.
But if at all possible, be a stay at home mom cause they grow up so fast and you can never replace those "missed" years..I know...mine is all big now and I wish I haven't had to work all those years...my memories of them small is so few....

I'm a college professor and the chair of my (very small) department. If I need to take maternity leave during the school year, I'll have to find my own replacement (since that's the job of the department chair) which might not be easy! My original plan was to have a baby in June so I wouldn't have to take time off. But my body is not cooperating - I went off the pill in July and haven't had my period since. So I've given up on timing when I get pregnant, and I'll worry about finding a "sub" for me if and when I need to.

I would try to make sure its not the beginning of the school year. I was a sub for the first 7 weeks of school for someone out on maternity leave and the kids had a hard time adjusting to our different teaching styles. I would try for summer or in the middle of the year after they are used to you. I think this will make it easier on you when you go back. I myself was able to quit when I was pregnant with my daughter and I probably wont go back till she goes to school. I could not imagine not being with her 24/7. Shes 2 now.

I work in a school and wanted to plan a pregnancy where i was due in April, may or June. So I started ttc back in May and unfortunately, it has not happened. My advice is to figure out what you want to do & what you can afford to do and then start ttc accordingly. I am so upset that it didn't happen for me that I have decided to keep trying and when I am due is when I am due. You just never know if you are going to have trouble conceiving...don't try to plan it...it might not work out the way you want it to!

Good Luck to you!
