If you saw a doctor for arthritis that's the best you can do for now. You probably have osteoarthritis (also called degenerative joint disease) and yes, it will hurt for the rest of your life as this isn't something you can "cure" but instead is a wearing away of the cartilage that rubs together at the joint between the femur and the tibia. If the anti-inflammatory did not work you can try going in for a shot or stronger pain medication. If the doctor who diagnosed you is NOT an orthopedist, I would recommend trying to find one as they are best able to help you. Unlike a previous answer, surgery is an absolute last resort and (as someone who designs the implants) should not be done until you have exhausted all other options.
good luck with your treatments.

Yes I'm afraid arthritis can be such a pain. And the worse part of it, arthritis cant be cured. You can only manage the pain and hope that you won't have frequent attacks of the pain.
What you can do is try not to stress your knees a little. eg. lifting heavy things, engaging in strenous activities and sports, sitting in very low stools / chairs.
Also, you have to strengthen your leg muscles. They support your knee so if the muscles around your knee are strong, they would carry the load and the stress that goes to your knee bones. Remember, arthritis (in your case, osteoarthritis) is caused by the wearing out of the ligaments supporting your bones thereby allowing stress and shear force to act directly to your bones.

i'm 19 and am starting to get arthritis in both of my knees...i cant tell u how much I've hurt them but i can tell you it can hurt a lot for any period of time....look at the weather too. One month i had pain in both knees to the point where i couldnt walk and it was because of the rainy, gross weather. Try asking your doctor for some better anti-inflammatory drugs...those help alot. Goodluck!

Arthritis can hurt for long periods at a time if no meds being taken. I have had one of mine replaced and haven't had a twinge since, so I thoroughly recommend it! I have rheumatoid arthritis.
