Coz it was long told that only the person who could pull it out would be the king, so hundreds of people from all over tried to get the sword, but no one could move it, then arthur came along and just pulled it out, like it was stuck in jelly, clearly showing that he was the one to be king. Although another belief is that the lady in the lake gave him the sword, so depends on which version you read
