Some things don't need to be "softened" but occasionally when they are the same color, for example, as things that do need softening, and I am going to be washing them together, I can toss a softener sheet in the drier with the item that needs it, and then dry the other items without.
If everything to be washed is going to need a softening agent, I use the liquid in the washing machine compartment that dispenses it in the rinse cycle.

The liquid seriously makes your laundry softer than the sheets. The sheets are useful too. They are especially good to scent and destatic clothing. I like to use Downey in the wash, and then Lavendar Vanilla sheets in the dryer. Even my son notices when I don't use both! Big difference.

I prefer liquid. It seems to soften my clothes better that sheets. I place the sheets in my cabinet with my towels and bedding. Leaves a great smell on them.

I think dryer sheets clogging your lint screen turned out to be an urban legend. I use dryer sheets every single load and I have a hard working husband who is at the gym everyday and 5 children. My screen is not; never has been clogged. I also use whatever brand is on sale. They always take care of static cling and leave a nice scent on everything. I even used to use the sheets over and over, but they don't make them as strong anymore. I don't have a preference for any particular scent. Can you sample the smell through the package??

Sheets for clothing items; liquid for linens. Both if I have something I want to have a nice long lasting scent.
