Difficult to answer as you don't indicate what state you're talking about.

In general, since the legal age for signing legal contracts is 18 in most states, that should be the age for getting a full license. When you get a driving license, you are essentially making a contract with the state and its residents that you will follow the laws regarding motor vehicle operation and that you agree to be legally and financially responsible (insurance) for the vehicle and your operation of the vehicle.

However, since the operation of a motor vehicle is not a natural action, I could see the use of staged learner's permits. This would allow people from 16 to 18 years of age to learn how to drive under the supervision of their parents or other adults designated by their parents to instruct and guide them. Note that while this does not absolve the teenager from responsbility in operating their vehicle, it does provide a gradual transition to the day when they are legal adults.

Of course, there can be exceptions to this. Many states allow younger people to operate farm and similar equipment on the roads as part of their support of the family business. This should not be the case in urban areas due to the volume of traffic and the inexperience of the teenager.

And before you say, "Oh, he's an adult! What does he know?", I had to get a learner's permit at 16 and was not able to get a full license until I was 18. I also had to pay my share of the auto insurance as well as oil, gas and maintenance on the car I was allowed to use.

I agree that there are too many kids driving, but in my state they yank any ones license under 18 for even a traffic ticket! If you are 16 and have less than a years driving experience you have to have an adult over 21 in the vehicle!

Some stares are low, but you need to remember they are usually farming states and those kids have about 6 years of driving experience when the get theirs at 16!

What scares me are people with little driving experience that get into big messes because they don't know how to drive!

Some of the most fatalities here are caused by black ice, hydroplaning, snow and ice! You can get yourself killed real quick here as we have a lot of mountains, and a lot of black ice!

I think the driving age is fine. They pass a written and behind the wheel test, this tells us they are mentally and physically able. and they are still under adult supervision which is a good thing. If they got there license to drive at 20 I think It would be worse, kinda like letting the cows out of the barn for the first time in the spring after being in all winter.

it should be changed to 18 for a full license

and a graduated licensing system should be put into place.

and restrictions on what type of car can be driven by anyone under the age 21 (ie no sports cars or cars worth more than their lives).

Take a look at national statistics that show the ages of drivers involved in fatal vehicle accidents and you'll find an obvious answer to your question.

I think it should stay the same. It's a pretty good age where I think everyone becomes a bit more responsible and mature. unfortunately that doesn't happen to everyone.

They should raise it!!! 16 (or 15 in some states) is entirely too young. They do not have the knowledge or ability to be responsible. That is why so many kids die.....they just don't get it.
