Free verse (also at times referred to as vers libre) is a term describing various styles of poetry that are not written using strict meter or rhyme, but that still are recognizable as 'poetry' by virtue of complex patterns of one sort or another that readers can perceive to be part of a coherent whole.[1]

Most types of poetry do not require that they rhyme...
There are haiku's... sonnets.... a lot!
Most poetry is categorized by syllable structure.
In fact, the only type of poem I can think of that DOES require a rhyme scheme is a limerick.
(as in: "There once was a girl from Nantucket")

Rabble rouser is on the right track
He says that poems don't have to rhyme
Unless they are a limerick he says
Because the definition of a poem is a song without words.
