Have you ever had a meeting scheduled in a colleague's office, and you get there (door initially closed) and the room reeked with a *really* bad fart smell. Obviously he/she let out a NASTY one right before your meeting was scheduled. How did you handle it?

You ask him or her, "Is it just me or is your office a bit stuffy? Can you open the window please?" That should let them know that you know what just happened and you don't appreciate it. But you will also be saying it in a polite, non-threating way.

The best way to handle a situation like that, and I cannot believe that you asked it on this forum, but it is very fair indeed, is to conduct yourself like this:

"You know? Is it just me or is a bit stuffy in here today? Do you mind if we leave the door or window open for a few moments and better yet, if you could excuse for a moment or two, I'd like to excuse myself to the powder room as I didn't have a chance to do so before I came here. Would this be ok with you? Oh, thank you very much" (in an upbeat and positive tone) and surely when you return in 5 minutes (e.g.) the problem hopefully will have relieved itself.

I would be willing to bet that the colleague even took the time to freshen up and dissolve the odor in the room because you handled "it" in a positive manner and he/she may have felt bad, but felt positive about the way you handled it, so they made sure they did their part to dissipate the smell upon your arrival.

Positive criticism is a critique and you can master it, even when surely they know it stinks, maybe they are used to their own fowl odors and oversighted the situation.

Let's hope they had the sense to do this (to eliminate before your return), you know? You want them to prosper also as they are your colleague and you both are working towards the goals of your company. By letting them know of this dirty little odor, it may help them to disallow it from happening again in the future. You, by your positive way of handling the situation, will encourage them and help them learn a valuable lesson. What if they are meeting with a Fortune 500 or very important client, etc.?

I wish you well and good luck.

Pretend you forgot to take care of something before coming to the meeting and excuse yourself for a few seconds - when you walk out leave the door open and hopefuly when you return , in a few seconds the smell should have disappaited .

It depends on the your relationship with your colleague and the frequency at which this happens. If the colleague is someone that is someone who determines your future career positions, then I would just ignore the stench, no matter how often. But if the person is someone you can consider a friend and this is a frequent occurance, then bring air freshener everytime you go into that person's office.

Exclaim, "HOLY SHlT! Did a flock of pigeons get trapped in the ceiling rafters and DIE? GAAAAAaaawwwd, DAMN! LIGHT A BONFIRE!"

The problem shouldn't repeat itself any more after that.
