It means to travel through the air. A bird does this by the "lift" of the air under its wings. Planes use the same method, but must be moving fast enough and so are propelled by engines.

to fly means to spread out the arms in order to create speed. while you create speed the gravity from the ground pulls up enabling you to "fly". Hope i helped!
