I always wondered about that - Spain is White Europe. So why check "Hispanic" on the stupid ethnic charts when by definition Spanish is white? On the other hand, if you have no European bloodlines (are a direct descendant from the Native Americans in Mexico and South America), does that mean you are NOT Hispanic? My ancestors came over from Spain about 300 years ago. I can't speak a sentence of Spanish, nor can any of my relatives. We don't have a drop of native American blood. Am I Hispanic?
And if Hispanic does mean "From Spain", why not add "English, French, Russian, Italian..." and every other European country on those ethnicity charts? Or every country in the world for that matter? Why is Spain so special? What makes Spain better than Luxembourg?
The term Hispanic is f'ing stupid, which is why I never use it unless it gets me scholarships or reduces my taxes in some way.

A person of Latin American descent living in the United States; especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin.
In Spain, Spanish-speaking Latin America and most countries outside the United States, the term Hispanic is not commonly used as a term for ethnicity.

Hispanic just means you grew up speaking Spanish. It is not a race. More like a shared culture. It also serves as a convenient way for Americans to refer to people from South America (because you NEVER hear them refer to someone from Spain using that word - although it would be accurate).
