Forget all the rest.
The best possible site you can go to is the Museum of London website.
The museum itself is based in London and contains fantastic collections of artefacts across all ages of London's history.
The web link will provide you with a portal to as much information as you could ever wish to have on London.
Good luck with your English class.

I certainly wouldn't go to the British Museum, as little of what is there is even British. But there is the London Metropolitan Archive in Farringdon which is open to the general public. As well as archives they have a collection of books relating to London.

the book London by peter ackroyd is the first place to start, an amazing amount of work and information there..
then try the internet, maybe..
try British Library, Museum of London and other insitiutions etc..
but what is it you want to find out, or researching about? then i can give more specific clues... are you here, and researching, or another country?
