If the house is smelly, they aren't taking proper care of the animals or themselves.
Lots of people get in over their heads-thinking they are doing a good thing by "saving" animals, but what they are creating is unsatisfactory living conditions.

I really think you should say something to them. Your son and daughter and law probably don't realize their house smells bad because they live there. But they are exposing children to these things and it could harm the children's health and their own health by being around the bacteria from all the animals.
It is okay to have a lot of animals, but it's not okay if they're affecting your household's sanitary enviroment. What I suggest for you to tell them if they ask for help is to get a doggy door if the animals are small. And to keep the cats and dogs from getting lost give them a microchip in their body (reasonably priced). Their are alot of solutions to their problem.. they just need to use them to help themselves.

Is there a rule as to how many cats & dogs can be kept on a premises? My main priority would be those poor children who have to go over there every 2nd weekend and live with that smell even though it is only 2 days. Tell them it smells and that the place needs to be rid of the stink.

I have seven house cats, and my house doesn't stink. The rule of my house is, if you can smell the litter box, SAY something.
It may not be the norm, but it's not very unusual for people to have a lot of pets. The unsanitary conditions are the problem. If their house smells, is "pet dirty" and unsanitary because of the pets, you need to say something, especially since they have children who stay there. Animals don't like dirty houses any more than people do.
Your son and DIL may not even be aware of the problem, since they live with it, they may have desensitized to the smell and may not realize that it's gotten out of hand.
Just be tactful when you say something, or take them some cinnamon candles to help with the "puppy odor." My mom would just say, "Tina, your house smells like cats." You might not be as rednecked as my mom is. They need to know.

No it's not normal lol. My mother-n-laws step son has 3 dogs and 5 male unfixed cats. There house smells something awful. Plus her step son and his wife smoke. It makes the problem much worse. My mother-n-law has politely told them that their house smells and no one wants to come over there because of it. They haven't done anything about it yet. If I were you, I'd politely tell them that their house has an odor and it needs taken care of. Especially, if your son's children are there they could develop allergies if they don't have them already. To be honest, I wouldn't keep from them what they need to know. Most likely they'll listen to you and be decent about it. Good luck!

Here's the thing....that foul smell, is not a good thing. Anyone espacially children ingesting that is prone to becoming very sick. The Cats: make sure they change the litter boxes enough and have enough of them. Cats are funny like that. If its too dirty they'll go elsewhere. I've known them to even go on beds.

Having more han 2 pets in the house its not normal. Besides your house will smell so bad that your friends will stop visiting you, adding that if you don`t like to clean, better think it twice before getting more than 2 pets in the house.

I think it's okay as long as they keep up with the cleaning and take their dogs out for exersize everyday. I wouldnt say anything. Some people love their animals and get very offended when someone tells them they are not caring for them properly. Let it lie. It's not worth getting into an argument about.

I think that's disgusting and I would say something along the lines of your house is stinking up the neighborhood. Also its not healthy for kids to inhale cat and dog odors from urine or feces.
