First, make sure that you can legally become President. The major limitations are that you are over 35 years of age and you were born an American citizen. Current law does not allow naturalized citizens to become President. (Sorry, Ahnold).
Second, you will probably have to align yourself with one of the two major parties - Democratic or Republican. Independent or third-party candidates have a hard time succeeding in today's political climate. George Wallace in the 50's, Anderson in the 80's and Perot in the 90's were probably the closest to getting elected. However, historically, third-party candidates have gotten in, kinda. Lincoln won his first term as a Republican when that party was only a decade or two old.
Third, you will have to develop a demeanor that is media-friendly. This extends to limiting any behavior, business dealings, personal relationships, friends, etc. Political survival is more about working the media than any actual plans/goals for representing the people.
Fourth, get a college education, perferably an advanced degree. There is too much going on in this world for someone who is not educated to deal with.
Fifth, Try to be genuine. You are going to deal with a lot of people, many of whom will not like you. Getting along with them is one way of achieving your goals.
