That should be fast enough. Maybe you have spyware or a virus.

I"m not knocking pre-built pc's but compaq isn't the best quality computer available. Granted they're the same company now, hp's are even better beacause they use beter quality parts. Chances are you may have a weak processor. I don't mean the speed, I mean the actual model of processor you have may not be one that you've gotten used to before. If it's a sempron, it's crap, celeron, crap, some P4's are crap too. The speed of your hard drive can mae adifference as well. 1 GB of RAM should be plenty, but it really comes down to what you are trying to do and how many other things the computer has installed and running at the same time. Stuff like AIM, Limewire, other Insant messangers and all kinds of other stuff slows down your pc a lot. get rid of the stuff you don't need or want and that should help. After that, do a disk cleanup and defrag your computer. This should help out tremendously if you haven't done it in a whil or even ever for that matter. Most of the stuff a compaq puts on their pcs are not needed by anybody. If you're not using it, get rid of it.
To actually answer your question, if you have tried all that and still feel 2 GB of RAM is waht you need then here's how you check. I can almost guarantee you pc can support another gig of memory. take off your side panel to you computer. Check to see where there are two pieces of RAM sticks next to each other. If you see two more slots, you should be able to. I really almost don't recommend this as a jump from 1GB to 2GB doesn't make anywhere NEAR as big a difference as 512 MB to 1 GB. It can be a little pricey too depending on your budget. Unless you are hardcore gaming, video editing, or any other intensive kind of thing it's not worth it. downloading music and checking your email while using AIM is not intensive at all.

Before you start throwing money away, if the PC is less than 5 years old then with 1.0gb of ram it should be more than adequate for most of todays computing tasks.
You haven't said what your doing at the time that makes it seem slow.
If gaming or video then you can only be the best judge of that but if its slow for most tasks then take a look at the system tray and report back how many icons there are including any that may be hidden.

Hello,
I would say first thing is to clear your temporary interent files including offline and surfing history. Then do a disk clean up (you will find that one under startbutton, accessories, system tools. I also recommend changing the days that it keeps the files from the default of twenty days to five. Reduces clutter.
Next hit the Control, Alt, Delete keys in sequence and you will get a pop up dialog box so you can see whats running in the backround. Do you have and Anti-virus program on your machine? Is it up to date and when was the last scan you preformed? In the pop-up box you will see a list of different tabs one of which should be processess. Look and see how many process's are running in the backround. It should be somewhere in the 30-40 range if your don't have that much going. Also look at you system idle process. It should be at between 90-95 free. That means that computer has 90-95 % of it's resources avaliable for you to multi task. Anyway, find the process you don't need and remove the check mark in the box next to it. Be carefull with this as you may disable one of the process that windows needs to run. You might also check under add/remove programs in the Control panel look for any programs that have installed themselves without your knowledge such as 180 search assitance, or certain toolbars you may not need and uninstall them. Last piece of advice, when downloading stuff from the interent read your EULA (End User License Agrement) to see if a "free" program really is trying to sneak something in the back door. Most importantly is set a system restore point so if you do screw something up you can undo it. Godd Luck!

It depends on the model of Compaq Presario. However, most computers run just fine with 1GB of RAM. It's gotta be something else slowing down your computer.

this could be a rapid laptop, for confident. even with the undeniable fact that, loading courses is generally a function of the puzzling force. So greater ram would not velocity that up. What you're able to observe is that when you artwork interior the courses they might desire to be speedier. If not, then look at your cpu utilization utilising abode windows job grasp (referred to as up with Ctrl-alt-del) If there is countless cpu getting used, then seek for undercover agent ware and viruses. additionally, look on the strategies to verify what stuff is working on an identical time. each so often a gaggle of stuff lots up which you do not want and which makes use of memory. good good fortune.

Sounds like your files might be spread-out and your disk is nearly full, defragmenting the drive might cure your problem, or improve it a little.
