At the high school level, the date we could actually start practicing was set by the state. Months before that the coach got us together for conditioning. We ran 220's (1/8th of a mile sprints) and it was a fantastic way to get the coach to notice if stayed at the front of the pack long before we got our hands on the ball.
At Junior College try outs, we did suicides, and again staying in front of the pack was a good way to get noticed by the coaches.
If you can't run you may want to play baseball or something.

I played basketball on a team from 8th grade, to my senior year in high school, and yes tryouts do involve running. Tryouts usually involve running "suicides", which is a sprint run that helps endurance. Also you're going to be running while doing your basketball drills so yes running will be involved in basketball tryouts.

Tryouts are a little bit of everything to quickly "weed" the pretenders out and get down to business. A coach could probably "cut" his squad down to the players he wants to keep the first night but, just in case there's a "diamond in the rough" out on the floor the first night, the coach will give someone every opportunity to prove themselves.

yes they make you run, but not like a mile or anything. Just probably some suicides and drills that normally last 5 minutes or longer apiece.
