....well that is quite a general topic
being as that their are a lot of different sub-genre's of metal
and as far as music goes, my opinion is very extensive.
First off, I am thankful for beethoven and mozart, for making big music popular in north america
I would also like to thank whoever it was that invented percussion
Than we thank elvis for letting it be okay to play blackmusic, even if we are stealing it
I would like to thank led zepplin, black sabbath, pink floyd and jimi hendrix
they all had their hand in it, from distortion, tape effects, dubbing, chord transitions, the egde, the topping
but mostly taking the music that they were making in south america and africa....than adding some heavy sound to it, translating it to a more catchy white terminoligy and making that popular

I thank the 80's for not completly letting metal die.....even though most of the metal made in the 80's would have been better off if it was never made.

I thank the 90's and slayer, pantera, EARLY metallica (BEFORE black album, not during or after) and a few other, for making hard metal popular in north america
which paved the way for some of the best metal we will ever hear

For the best metal comes from either south america or scandinavia (mostly norway and finland) these days
My favorites at the moment are
Old Man's Child (for being as hard as you can be without getting too silly)
Nightwish (the best fusion of classical and metal EVER)

There are many other good bands out there....but I can't think right now, I'm too high

I think that it's limiting, boring, and pointlessly exclusive.

What I always understood about metal was that you had this big, solid, dangerous sound... with lame, pretentious lyrics over the top. You could get away with saying the most laughable things that Weird Al could really go to town on with an accordion.

I hated Metal.

Now, you have this sensitive garbage and the music is dropped another 5th because of 7 string guitars gaining popularity.

So you have way heavier sound, way more laughable lyrics.

I liked SOAD since they just admitted it and went with the dumb humor that is usually unintentional in Heavy Metal.

The only metal band that I've ever thought was worth paying attention to was Rammstein. You can't understand the lyrics unless you took the time to pay attention to German, and the vocals actually sound ominous, whereas with most Metal bands just sound like a wussy guy who really thinks he deserves a BJ from you, so he's huffing and puffing and screaming and crying.

Metal is great when themes are kept dark and done correctly such as early Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, etc.. But when it's themes turn towards chicks and obligitory power ballads, it becomes cheeeeeeeezy - Britney Fox, Poison, Warrant, etc.

It's an amazing way to get pumped up. My buddies and I used to jam out to Metallica while on our way to rodeos.
